Our Studio.

After years of fielding requests to purchase home plans from our custom design projects, Kit & Cabana was launched in 2022 in order to make the experience of owning a signature coastal home available to more people.

With 20+ years of residential design experience on Vancouver Island and throughout Western Canada, we are confident that our newly launched home plan collection will help you make the most of your living space throughout all of the seasons.

Rock City Beach is a collection of pre-designed modernist beach homes that reflect the West Coast lifestyle and rugged iconic beauty of British Columbia's Pacific Coast. Highly conceptual and refined, the collection celebrates a process of careful ideation and craft. We employ the first principles of design: light, space and form, to produce work informed by our local context and natural surroundings. Inspired by the ocean, surf and the West Coast culture that surrounds us, we envision each design as an open narrative to help you align your personal environment with your own unique story.

Chad Silvio Castellano, M.Arch, B.A. (b.1972) began his design career in 1998 working for a local architect, and while attending architecture school in Calgary, Alberta. Between 2000 and 2001, he studied at UIC in Barcelona, Spain, and graduated in 2002 with a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Calgary. Upon graduation, he worked for a number of architectural practices in both Alberta and BC before opening his own studio in 2007, located on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo, BC.

Working as both an artist and a designer, Chad creates highly recognizable geometric work, taking cues from both nature and the iconography of West Coast culture. This tension between the natural and the man-made is expressed most fully in the minimalist homes he designs for the Kit & Cabana label. Each piece is designed to inspire and reflect an individual determinism as well as a sense of personal stewardship over the spaces we inherently occupy.

In addition to design, Chad currently holds a residential real estate trading license with Royal LePage Nanaimo, and is an active member of the local arts community.

Our studio has gone through multiple iterations since its initial inception in 2007. Beginning first as a traditional custom home design studio, and later adopting a design-build framework, our work moved into the real estate and development sector. Partnering with various investment groups, we brought to market a number of master-planned communities on both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. With the pandemic in 2020, we began to re-think our role as a design firm. Considering a slower paced, more holistic and multidisciplinary approach, we envisioned the Kit & Cabana studio in its current form.

Kit & Cabana currently operates as a design workshop in a converted studio space in Nanaimo's Old City Quarter. Our workspace provides an ideal setting for exploring ideas in a variety of media. We utilize collage, sketching, drawing, and the process of making both physical and digital models to sculpt each space into its final form. Our designs cross multiple analogue and digital platforms as they move from conceptual ideas to complete home plan packages.
